Di first met the Reminis family some 40 years ago while running her business Di’s deli at Vincentia. Then through her role as Senior Head Teacher of Hospitality at Nowra TAFE she worked with John Snr when he was mentoring young bakery apprentices.
This is when Di met John Jnr as a bakery student.
John’s journey is a true inspiration to a career in baking and shows how local community spirit and support continues to be the centre to his remarkable personal achievements in the hospitality industry.
What is your job title and where are you based?
Head Baker for Bakehouse Delights Nowra, Remos Bakery and Worrigee Bakehouse group.
Where did you go to school and where did you train?
St John the Evangelist Catholic School and I trained at TAFE Illawarra Nowra Campus and my apprenticeship was under my Dad at Bakehouse Delights.
Can you share a Career Highlight?
Competing and coaching overseas for Australia in competitions in Paris, Brazil and Europe & Asia
Working side by side with my Dad doing what we love in the family business and being part of such a growing and ever changing bakery environment.
What drives your passion in the hospitality industry?
Coaching and mentoring the younger generation of bakers coming through. Making a great future for myself and my family. Refining existing products &developing new and exciting ones
Your career has led you to travel and explore the possibilities in hospitality, what brings you back home?
The Shoalhaven community has always been close to my heart. Having travelled and seen some of the world’s most beautiful sights, I’m still in awe of this Shoalhaven. The community surrounding the Shoalhaven is even more beautiful. Providing our customers with fresh baked bread and also old fashioned bakery delights, this has been what drives me to keep producing and serving the community. The support networks in the Shoalhaven are also fantastic. I have built great professional relationships that have turned into personal which I cherish greatly something I won’t be able to find anywhere else in the world.
What’s your advice for anyone wishing to follow a career in hospitality?
It’s not an easy gig, but if you enjoy what you do everyday, it won’t feel like work! Hospitality is forever changing and evolving meaning you won’t ever be stuck doing the same tasks every day. And that is what keeps it very interesting. You won’t ever get bored.
